Line 1, inaugurated in 1964, links Sesto San Giovanni, in the Northern outskirts of Milan, to the terminals of Bisceglie and Rho Fiera Milano to the west of the city. With its length of 27 km and 38 stations, it represents one of the backbones of the transport system of the entire city and its metropolitan area.
The most important engineering works include the junctions between lines 1 and 2 of the Cairoli - Cadorna section with the construction of a single large-radius curve, which entailed creating two openings in the walls of the Sforza Castle and the line passing close to the foundations of the ancient tower of Filarete.
At the station of Rho Fiera Milano, the adaptation works were completed in April 2015: a new two-way link between the odd platform and the corridor open to the public, for access to the Fair area from the station mezzanine, built to create a preferential and more direct route for trade fair visitors and to reduce the load on the existing links.
