In 2003, MM Spa, the mandatory of the “Project and Construction Management” services of a temporary association of companies, was commissioned by Brescia Mobilità Spa to follow the works for the construction of the underground railway line of Brescia.
The city route consists of 13.7 km of a double-track line of which 4.7 km passes through an artificial tunnel, 6 km through a natural tunnel, 1.3 km at ground level and 1.7 km on a viaduct. The first lot built consists of 17 stations. The limited size of the automated underground system enabled the size of the stations to be reduced to a length of about 60m and a width of about 25 m. The automated light rail is an electric-traction, guided transport system, powered by a “third rail” and in a fully protected right of way.
The fully automated system enables the line to run in “driver-less” mode, that is, with no driver on board. This high-technology component ensures optimization of the energy consumption together with a high level of flexibility and consequently a more efficient service.
